AASM-Accredited Sleep Center

icavlAccreditation

The Michigan Neurology Institute Sleep Center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

AASM accreditation is the gold standard by which other organizations and companies evaluate sleep programs, and it assures quality patient care through comprehensive clinical evaluation and treatment. In fact, many state insuranc companies require sleep studies be conducted only at an AASM-accredited facility. Michigan Neurology Institute’s five-year accreditation means we meet or exceed all standards for professional quality health as designated by the Academy. This involves a detailed inspection, skilled and qualified staff, creating and maintaining a clean and comfortable environment, developing and maintaining a quality assurance plan and adhering to evidence-based practice parameters. Additionally, our goals were carefully reviewed to ensure they are clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

An accredited sleep disorder program like the one Michigan Neurology Institute provides is a significant resource to the local medical community and public.

statueSleep evaluation and treatment

Adequate sleep is a vital component of healthy living, just like eating and exercise. Poor sleep, morning headaches and fatigue or excessive tiredness during the day can all signal a sleep disorder. Sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are serious, potentially life-threatening conditions that can not only reduce a patient’s functioning during the day, it can lead to serious health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or even sudden death. At the Michigan Neurology Institute Sleep Center, we know that sleeping well may improve patient’s health, daytime functioning, and quality of life.

After a comprehensive evaluation by our board-certifi ed neurologist and sleep specialist, each patient is diagnosed and appropriate therapy is determined. As part of the consultation and evaluation, a sleep study may be performed during a period of one or two nights.

A sleep test (polysomnogram) simultaneously records heart rate, brain waves, breathing, oxygenation, as well as eye and leg movement. Treatment for a sleep disorder may include a prescription for a device to aid the patient’s breathing while sleeping, medication, or light therapy as well as neuropsychiatric interventions, including biofeedback. If indicated, referral to or consultations with other specialists might be recommended to aid in diagnosis and treatment.
