spiralVideonystagmography (VNG) and Electronystagmography (ENG)

Videonystagmography (VNG) (Otometrics) and electronystagmography (ENG): Helps determine the cause of dizziness and balance diffi culty so that the treating physician can differentiate between a vestibular (inner ear), sensory (fine) touch, joint position) versus a central (brain) etiology prior to the planning of the patient’s management and treatment.

A VNG/ENG records the various eye movements and jerks known as nystagmus. These eye movements are controlled by neural connections that stretch from the balance mechanism within the inner ear to the eye muscles.

Dizziness or other balance disorders result in nystagmus that can only be detected by a sophisticated computer. VNG utilizes goggles, outfitted with an infrared camera to record nystagmus during a series of tasks. ENG utilizes electrodes that are placed onto the scalp to record electrical activity generated from eye movement.
